Bloomberg quites the GOP!

Mayor Mike Bloomberg, the TPV-recommended choice for the Presidency, announced today he's quitting the Republican Party. NY Times story is here.

There's only one sane way to view this move: Bloomberg is preparing an independent run for the Presidency.

Did you feel that tremor? That was the political landscape, shifting and shaking.

Calm down, Ben. Third parties have never done well enough to make a difference. Bloomberg will only make noise if the Republicans and Democrats nominate people way out of the mainstream. Not going to happen. Mitt Romney v. Hilary would not cause sufficient defections to a NY (Jewish) and largely liberal mayor.

Ross Perot, a certifiable lunatic -- though not without a certain charm -- pulled 18% against a Bush and Clinton. Mike Bloomberg is smart, moderate, and untainted by Iraq. Ironically enough, I think the BEST pair of candidates would be Romney (extremist with no principles) and Hillary (voted for Iraq before she voted against it). He'd have a tougher time with Rudy, who he has a weird relationship with (and debt to), and Obama (who is infinitely more appealing).

How many electoral votes did Ross Perot get?
The election is not determined by popular votes.
Bloomberg might pull away enough liberal voters from Hilary to ensure another 4 years of Republican rule. That's about it.

Just watched a panel of folks who worked with or reported on Bloomberg on Hardball. Have to say that I was intrigued by some of the things they had to say about him.

However, none of them (including a reporter who had asked the question) had any idea about where Bloomberg stood on the war (other than the mantra about it being badly managed).

Until he states where he stands on the war, I'll try to keep an open mind.
